  • International Women's Day 2016

International Women’s Day - or IWD - falls on March 8. On this day, thousands of events, rallies, discourses and performances are held around the world to celebrate women’s achievements and also inspire current and future generations. The theme for this year’s IWD is “PledgeForParity”, which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Yet let's also be aware progress has slowed in many places across the world, so urgent action is needed to accelerate gender parity. Like many other companies, Wärtsilä also supports this event, with several network companies organizing their own activities.

At Wärtsilä, we take equality and diversity seriously. With operations in 70 countries, we work with people from over 130 different nationalities. We collaborate with colleagues from different backgrounds, educational levels, lifestyles and skills. In a nutshell, we embrace all kinds of individual differences within our working communities.

A few years ago, we set ourselves an ambitious target of having 20% women in the Wärtsilä workforce globally by 2015, as well as more women leaders throughout the organization. A variety of activities and actions have been done - articles, news and stories in our Internal and external channels - including signing the Diversity Charter in Finland, group-level benchmarking with other companies, cooperation with universities, and participating in a series of forums and events, just to name a few.

Striving for gender balance is a responsibility that belongs to us all. We want to be a company that both enables female professionals to build and develop their careers, and is the employer of choice also for our future employees. Wärtsilä participated in the Dialogi 2015 (Dialogue 2015) programme with women in leadership in focus last year. The programme is run in Finland. We need to be active in our local communities and encourage all Wärtsilä companies to engage in similar activities.

This year we hope more of our colleagues and industry partners join us in bringing diversity forward in Sri Lanka. Let’s make sure we all #PledgeForParity!
