In 2017, Finland celebrates its one hundred years of independence. Finland’s centenary year also marks the kick-start of one the boldest, most innovative and most exciting digital transformations in the industrial, marine and energy sectors – a journey on which Wärtsilä is now embarking. After nearly 200 years of success in the marine and energy industries, we are reinventing ourselves by exploring future digital opportunities and testing new ways of working together, as one Wärtsilä.
“Digital transformation is one of the most important megatrends impacting the marine and power generation industries now and in the future,” says Chief Digital Officer Marco Ryan from Wärtsilä. “For us, reinventing the company into Wärtsilä-as-a-Service, an agile, insight-led, customer-driven leader in the marine and energy sectors, is about transforming the people, the processes, and the technology. From the creation of digital assets to launching new products and services, as well as to developing a more empowered and collaborative digital culture.”
In just one century, Finland has taken huge leaps as a society, much like Wärtsilä has continuously reinvented its business by spotting trends and acting on them. This time, digital is placed at the heart of Wärtsilä’s transformation.
“We don’t know where our transformation will lead us just yet – but we do know that on our journey, we will explore all the different possibilities digital transformation has to offer,” says Ryan. “From robotics to IoT, artificial intelligence, cognitive learning, design thinking, DevOps, mobile, data science, remote operations, smart technology, smart energy management, autonomous vessels, virtual and augmented reality. These are just some of the technologies that we are already actively exploring.”
