When the Pou Chen Group decided to build a new industry park in Dong Guan City in Guang Dong Province, China, they decided that they needed their own power plant that would grow in pace with the park’s development. They had a clear vision of what they wanted to do as they knew the park’s planned growth rate.
The first contract with Wärtsilä was signed in early 2000. The contract’s scope was for the supply of six Wärtsilä 18V32LN diesel generating sets and the related auxiliary equipment together with detailed mechanical and electrical design, supervision and commissioning. The power house was designed and built for the eventual installation of 18 engines. It had ready-made foundations and space which would make it easier and faster to increase the plant’s power output by installing new generating sets.
Currently, the Yue Yuen power plant has twelve Wärtsilä 18V32LN and three Wärtsilä 18V32 generating sets giving a total of 101 MWe. All 15 Wärtsilä engines run on HFO (heavy fuel oil) with LFO (light fuel oil) as a back-up fuel. The plant produces both electricity and steam. When all 18 generating sets are in place the plant will be producing 125 MWe for the new industrial park.
