The 85 MW Gera power plant in the city of Manaus, northern Brazil was handed over to the customer in December 2006. The five Wärtsilä 18V46GD engines in the power plant, built under an EPC contract, are supplying baseload power to the Manaus grid. In 2010, the engines were converted at site from heavy fuel engines (Wärtsilä 18V46) to gas diesel engines (Wärtsilä 18V46GD).
Wärtsilä’s customer, GERA (Geradora de Energia do Amazonas S/A), is an independent power producer (IPP) and part of the Servtec group and FIP Brazil Energia. Manus, a metropolis and a free trade zone in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, has become a major industrial centre in Brazil. Gera was one of three IPP power plants of identical size delivered by Wärtsilä in the Manaus region in 2006.
