Wärtsilä, a leading global supplier of flexible and efficient power plant solutions and services, has been awarded a three-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the Los Origenes power plant in the Dominican Republic. The O&M agreement is a cost efficient solution for providing operational and maintenance services with a fixed price structure.

Los Origenes project has been developed by Miguel Feris & Co, a traditional local firm operating in the country since 1897, to produce power for the national grid. It is the country’s second gas fuelled power plant to be installed, and is powered by Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel generator sets to produce an output of more than 25 MW.

Under the terms of the agreement, a Wärtsilä team will be permanently on site to operate and maintain the power plant, thereby optimising its availability. All major maintenance will be performed with the support of Wärtsilä’s technical expertise. The customer benefits include financial predictability of the operational costs, risk mitigation, and optimal operational performance – the key parameters of which are guaranteed under the terms of the contract.

“In awarding Wärtsilä the contract to operate this plant, the customer can focus on his core business and take advantage of our expertise, technical knowledge, and previous O&M experience and economy of scale. Wärtsilä’s gas engine technology, which was selected for the Los Origenes plant, brings environmental benefits through significantly reduced exhaust emissions. Thus, the combination of our operating and maintenance expertise and our gas engine technology means that this will be a very clean and well run power plant,” says Tomas Hakala, Vice President, Wärtsilä Services, Americas.

Wärtsilä has more than two decades of experience in designing and providing tailored service, maintenance and O&M agreement solutions, both for land based power generation and marine installations. Wärtsilä currently manages around 16 GW of generating capacity in 55 countries, of which some 2.4 GW of generating capacity is installed in the Americas.
