By Paul Kitti, Executive Director, Marquette Board of Light and Power
Marquette Board of Light and Power (MBLP) in Michigan, USA, opted for Wärtsilä Smart Power Generation technology so that it could secure a reliable energy supply and enable more renewable energy – especially when temperatures drop to below 40 degrees Celsius during winter. The Wärtsilä plant replaces some aging power plants whose reliability could not be depended upon.
Pictured above are the Wärtsilä Team and Marquette Board of Light and Power Representatives at the Marquette Energy Center’s Engine Hall during the final construction of the 50MW Energy Center that will be powered by 3-18V50 Dual Fuel Units. These 400 ton engines producing 25,000 horse power apiece will provide reliability to the Marquette area and are capable of being at full load in 5 minutes. The $65.1 million dollar energy center is on schedule and under budget by over $4.7 million dollars thanks to Wärtsilä, Miron Construction, the trade unions, and design firm, Sargent and Lundy out of Chicago.

Marquette is very proud to host a contingent/team of talented engineers and professionals representing superb educational systems in Finland, the United States, the Philippines and Germany. This Wärtsilä project represents the new era of Smart Power Generation for Upper Michigan.
In November 2015, we announced that Wärtsilä would supply a 50 MW Smart Power Generation power plant to Marquette Board of Light and Power (MBLP) in Michigan, USA. With equipment delivered in the autumn of 2016, the plant will become operational this year. The contract includes three Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines running primarily on natural gas, with light fuel oil as back-up.

Wärtsilä’s ultra-flexible dual-fuel power plant not only replaces old coal-fired capacity, it also provides MBLP a new source of income by following real-time electricity prices.
