Wärtsilä continues to ensure reliable electricity supply at Indonesian power plant

Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release 10 October 2017 at 10:00 UTC+2
  • Antam Indonesia

The technology group Wärtsilä has renewed its contract with the mining company PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) to improve the efficiency and operational reliability and lower the emissions of its power plant in Indonesia. The agreement for the optimised maintenance now extends to condition based maintenance and provides the customer with advice and recommendations based on real-time operational data.

The new five-year agreement, signed in the second quarter of 2017, reinforces Wärtsilä’s strong relationship with the state-owned ANTAM. Wärtsilä has worked with ANTAM for over 15 years to ensure reliable power plant operations. In addition to remote monitoring, stationary Wärtsilä field personnel will be working with ANTAM in an advisory role. The agreement also includes full power management system (PMS) with spare parts supply for engines and auxiliaries. Through the cooperation, ANTAM benefits from the latest design and upgrade information, expert technical advisory, analysis and audits as well as improvement recommendations for the installation.

Dual fuel engines enable increased efficiency and reliability

The base load power plant, situated in Pomalaa in Southeast Sulawesi, is powered by Wärtsilä 50 engines. The plant has an output of some 137 MW and it supplies 60% of the electrical energy needed at the ANTAM ferronickel mine and ore processing plant in Pomalaa. The plant engines were converted to operate on dual fuel in 2016, leading to fuel flexibility and lower emissions as well as increased efficiency and reliability.

“We were looking for a solution to increase efficiency without compromising on the risk management of the plant. We are happy to continue our proven cooperation with Wärtsilä, who were able to provide us with a solution tailored to our needs. The continuous monitoring of the power plant’s condition gives us a holistic view that helps us make knowledge-based, predictive decisions to ensure the plant’s reliability and efficiency. Wärtsilä as a maintenance and advisory partner will support us in maintaining sustainable growth,” says Mr. Hendra Wijayanto from ANTAM VP Operation Support.

“We are very pleased to continue and strengthen our long-standing business cooperation with ANTAM. With our expertise, we can ensure the reliable electricity supply for ANTAM’s ferronickel mine and ore processing plant in Pomalaa. At the same time, we help ANTAM to increase their operational efficiency and cost predictability,” says Erwin Vanderkerff, Managing Director, Wärtsilä Indonesia.

ANTAM is a vertically integrated, export-oriented, diversified mining and metals company. With operations spread throughout the mineral-rich Indonesian archipelago, ANTAM undertakes all activities from exploration, excavation, processing through to marketing of nickel ore, ferronickel, gold, silver, bauxite and coal.
