Wärtsilä’s new workshop in Dubai receives major overhauling orders

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release 15 December 2008 at 10:00 UTC+2

Wärtsilä’s new state-of-the-art workshop in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is already proving its value to customers, even though it was inaugurated only in the spring of this year. A number of major projects have already been, or are in the process of being undertaken, including the full overhauling of 11 Wärtsilä engines supplied earlier to a utility in China.

Wärtsilä was able to re-purchase the 11 engines together with related equipment that had originally been delivered in 1995 to a power plant in China. The 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 46 engines in V-configuration, each with an output of 10 MW, had each accumulated some 40,000 running hours, well below the design parameters of Wärtsilä engines. Wärtsilä has a regular demand from customers seeking used and overhauled or reconditioned equipment.

The complete overhauling of previously used engines offers more than merely cost savings. The engines can be upgraded by fitting the latest technology components to provide better performance, longer operating life, and compliance with known and anticipated environmental legislation.

The 11 Wärtsilä engines overhaul is being carried out on two engines at a time. Dedicated teams were assigned to each of the engines in order to minimize the time required, and to ensure that quality standards are met. When completed, the engines will be utilised for either marine or power plant applications complete with warranty.

“Wärtsilä has been operating in Dubai for more than 16 years, and our presence in the region is substantial. This new workshop facility gives us the ability to fully support our customers in the Middle East, and to provide the kind of value-added services that have become expected of Wärtsilä,” says Ad Bertens, Managing Director and Vice President, Services, Wärtsilä in the United Arab Emirates. Currently, some 400 people are employed at the Dubai workshop facilities.

The new 10,000 m2 workshop facilities are well equipped to handle such projects. Features include a 60 tonne lifting capability, a new technology CNC-controlled honing machine to hone cylinder liners with bore diameters up to 840 mm, and closed-system parts cleaning that requires only 5% chemicals, and which complies with the latest environmental regulations.
