A proactive and optimistic colleague

Mohamed Al Toaimi, a Strategic Purchaser from Saudi Arabia, has worked at Wärtsilä for three years and he has definitely enjoyed his time so far. “Working here has been a real adventure, with the people and the work environment making it a fulfilling and professional experience! Since I handle indirect purchasing activities locally, I deal with both internal stakeholders and vendors simultaneously, which is mainly exciting, but also stressful at times.”

In his work, Mohamed is inspired by the opportunity to work on a local and global level. In addition to this, Wärtsilä’s continuous innovative practices keep him inspired and motivated.

“I'm a multicultural individual with a diversified mindset and I enjoy new experiences and challenges. My greatest contribution to the company has been the implementation of global practices and indirect purchasing directives on a local level and monitoring their progress by providing necessary updates and reports.”

Mohamed emphasises how past experiences have always taught him to be proactive and optimistic – especially when things do not go as expected. In the following case he shared with us, Mohamed did exactly that, thus preserving our strong relations with suppliers and customers.

“The implementation of the WeBuy platform was an enlightening experience for us all. The recently launched procurement platform caters to both the internal stakeholders of the company, and suppliers in the market. While the process of sourcing and procurement is made easier in the tool, implementing it required major change management, specifically in the local business environment. Despite the reading material shared with the end users in Wärtsilä, more training sessions were needed about the navigation of the platform. Challenges were also faced with the sourcing and vendor cooperation, wherein additional info sessions have been held for suppliers,” Mohamed describes.

“In just 40 days, we managed to conduct the required trainings, upload ongoing and new supply agreements, prioritise and plan the expansion of WeBuy in Saudi Arabia. I admit that in the beginning, it seemed unlikely that the project would succeed locally. However, with support from the management, a positive outlook and strategic approach, we successfully developed a system to meet local standards.”

Mohamed sees the company becoming a pioneer for lifecycle solutions in both the energy and marine sectors, with environmental initiatives like Wärtsilä’s partnership with the Seabin Project supporting this direction.

“My aspirations have always been nature based, with plenty of green initiatives successfully implemented locally. I see myself developing alongside the group, meeting personal and educational achievements and becoming a potential candidate to represent the company globally, wherever that may be.”
