Don’t give up

James Effiong George, Wärtsilä’s Mechanical Plant Technician at the Nigerian power plants, works mainly at our customers’ premises. His daily target is crystal clear – to make the best of himself and his capacity.

Besides executing service work with intense concentration, James is a forward-looking person and aims to dedicate time for learning every day. “My daily work is about doing the mechanical tasks according to the agreed schedule. Then during my spare time, I carry out my personal development projects, which is to boost both my own and eventually Wärtsilä’s capabilities, taking us both to greater heights,” James describes.

According to James, it is exactly this open encouragement to develop oneself which has kept Wärtsilä and its employees innovative over the years. “There are two main reasons why I enjoy working for Wärtsilä. Firstly, because the company is reliable. Secondly, this empowerment. I would say my greatest contribution to Wärtsilä is using my creativity to innovate – I’m allowed to come up with out-of-the-box ideas which help to move work forward.”

During his career as a Mechanical Plant Technician, James has had many opportunities to utilise his experience and skills to solve problems while conducting service work. Still, one particular engine maintenance case remains the most remarkable for him. “There were difficulties in extracting out the camshaft bush, and I got to use my technical welding skill to weld the bushing out,” he tells.

James’ interest in engines goes beyond work. He is especially fascinated by the design of the Wärtsilä W31 engine, which was awarded the most efficient engine in the world by Guinness Book of Records when it was launched. “I’m super interested in the technology of operating engines with different fuel types: light fuel oil (LFO), heavy fuel oil (HFO) and gas. It takes several auxiliaries to support the function, but the benefit, less carbon emissions, is superior.”

James hopes to continue growing alongside Wärtsilä and sees the company’s road to success solid – thanks to the firm core. “I think Wärtsilä has proven its availability, reliability and sustainability to people and its communities. And I’m confident that we will continue to do so for years to come.”
