Prohibited and restricted substances and materials

The use of hazardous substances in materials and chemicals is limited by various country legislations and international agreements. Hazardous substances may at some point of their life cycle – during extraction, production, use, or finally as a waste – cause harm to human health, human rights or the environment.

Wärtsilä has to eliminate and restrict certain hazardous substances in its products to comply with these regulations, and provide to its customers information on hazardous substances found in the products. This information can only be collected with the help of Wärtsilä's suppliers.

Black & Grey list

Wärtsilä Black & Grey list indicates the substances classified as restricted and prohibited at Wärtsilä. As the Black & Grey list does not correspond to national regulations the most restrictive limitations of the national regulations and of the Black & Grey list shall be in force. The suppliers should regularly check updates to the Black and Grey list.

Supplier shall inform Wärtsilä if any of the articles within the supply includes Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) above 0,1% weight by weight, as defined in the REACH legislation.

Conflict minerals

The supplier shall certify and ensure that no “conflict minerals”, including tin, tanta­lum, tungsten or gold originated in conflict-affected or high-risk areas, are procured or contained in the supply, including those from its own suppliers.

Products can be reported as “conflict free” if:

  • they do not contain tin, tantalum, tungsten or gold (3TGs)
  • any of the 3TGs does not originate from Democratic Republic of Congo or the adjoining countries
  • it can be determined that the 3TGs originating from Democratic Republic of Congo or the adjoining countries do not finance armed groups

Ten life-saving rules are put in place to ensure consistent behavior to prevent incidents that could result in a serious injury or a fatality. The life-saving rules apply to all workers and partners involved with Wärtsilä’s operations or visiting our premises.

Safety Handbook

The Safety Handbook offers assistance and guidance for performing work safely, at Wärtsilä project sites, in factories or workshops, or in the offices. This Handbook provides a quick guide and summary of the minimum, basic safety practices to be applied worldwide by Wärtsilä personnel, without overriding any local additional rules and regulations. Local regulation should always apply in addition to these corporate guidelines.
