Co-creation Playbook
Toolbox for win-win co-creation

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE

The energy and marine markets are transforming and the ways of doing business are evolving. Wärtsilä wants to lead this transformation, but we cannot do it alone.

Wärtsilä is taking an ecosystem thinking approach to innovation, by collaborating with partners like customers, suppliers, regulators, start-ups and universities. The rewards of sharing and developing knowledge openly are endless. Through collaboration and co-creation pilots over the years we have realised that sharing best practices among involved parties enables us to reach results faster.

The Playbook is our toolbox and guide for co-creation. We have gathered some best practices and methods of how to do co-creation in the Playbook. There are tons of awesome methods and approaches for co-creation out there, and if you feel other approaches are better suitable, use them. In fact, we encourage you to share your findings with us, as the Playbook is an evolving process and hence will be updated and improved based on experience and feedback. Share them here.

ARE YOU UP FOR IT?

Shared mindset and values are the foundation of fruitful collaboration. We have, together with our partners, co-created a set of mindset and values that we believe make a kick-ass collaboration partner. They are:
    Openness
Openness – Dare to share & listen to learn
    • Welcome everyone to the community. After all, they might turn out to be those super heroes you’ve always wanted to work with
    • Cherish diversity. We all can bring something unique to the table
    • Speak less and listen more. Truly hear what others have to say and support their needs
    • Share your insights, skills and networks. What you know or can do just might be what is needed
    • Be open to different perspectives and build on each other’s ideas
    • Start with saying ”Yes, and..” instead of ”Yes, but..” to proposals
    • Share your learnings and best practices with both the team and the wider audience

    openness

    Drive
Drive – Keep the goal insight
    • New ways of working are not easy to adopt. Keep the greater goal in mind when encountering problems
    • Were your thoughts or ways of doing things challenged? Great! You have a possibility to learn here
    • In a constantly changing and evolving environment, the table might not always be set for you. It’s best to roll up your sleeves and make the table yourself
    • When dealing with complex issues, the problems might seem overwhelming. Conquer one mountain at a time
    • Do the things you love, get excited and encourage others to do the same
    • Focus on the outcome – results matter

    drive

    Together
Together – One team, one mission
    • We are dealing with such complex problems that we need multidisciplinary teams to solve them. The sooner we start solving together, the better
    • Forget your title and the organization you represent for a while and approach your new team with an open and curious mind. What amazing could you do together?
    • Make sure you all agree on the goal you’re aiming for. Aim for win-win-win situations: mutual good, growth and benefit
    • The project you work on might be extremely important for your partner but not really your first priority. Accept it as a part of the game. We can’t think short-sighted here
    • Together we can do things that have a greater impact

    Talent
    Talent – Unleash your talent
    • We need talented people to do extraordinary things. Whether you are a current expert or a future one, you’re welcome to join the crew
    • Everyone can bring something unique to the table. Be proud of your skills and capabilities and develop them further
    • In a multidisciplinary environment you might be the only expert in your area. Don’t be intimidated by it. Make the best out of offering a novel view on things
    • Appreciate the expertise of others. Expand your knowledge by getting to know what they are good at or into. Find sweet spots where different areas of knowledge meet
    • Encourage and support enthusiastic rising stars

    talent

    Trust
    Trust – Work like friends
    • Without trust, there is no collaboration. Have faith in the good intentions and capabilities of others. The risks are minimized through common agreements – agreements that have been drafted together
    • Rely on others and let them rely on you. You might notice the community supports you
    • Feel free to share the things you know, but also the things you have no idea about. There’s likely someone who can fill in the gaps
    • We may have different views and ways of working. If it bothers you, bring it up in a constructive manner. Have empathy, bring out the best in others and concentrate on the solutions

    Agile
Agile – Adapt and stay curious
    • Question the obvious. Do lean and mean research to understand ecosystem drivers. Think big and be open to innovation
    • Slice the elephant. Turn one big challenge into a series of small, more manageable challenges. Move forward phase by phase
    • Don’t get stuck in your old habits. Modify your processes, working methods and tools to get to your goal as efficiently and quickly as possible
    • Bring in new talent whenever you need it, if only for a short time. Who could best help you overcome the problem at hand?
    • Create fast feedback loops. Validate your assumptions by experimenting in early phases. Give up on ideas that don’t fly
