Wärtsilä, the leading global supplier of flexible and efficient power plant solutions and services, signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Teck Alaska Incorporated (Teck) for their power plant at the Red Dog mine in Northwest Alaska. The agreement optimises the power plant’s lifetime and performance as well as reduces operating costs in a safe, reliable, and environmentally sustainable way. The power plant has eight Wärtsilä generator sets with a combined output of 42 MW.

Red Dog, one of the world’s largest zinc mines, is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards. The mine has received ISO 14001:2004 certification which means that Red Dog’s environmental management system supports environmental protection and fosters improvements in environmental performance.

In 2010, Teck began mining the Aqqaluk deposit at Red Dog, which is expected to provide sufficient ore to enable operations to continue until 2031.

Wärtsilä’s reliability convinces Teck Alaska

“We wanted a partner that can offer a broad range of high-quality services while meeting our high safety standards. This includes training our crew and providing ongoing maintenance and support services to our mine,” says Ken Ahrens, Maintenance General Foreman, Red Dog Operations.

The broad range of services offered to Red Dog includes technical support services, fuel efficiency initiatives, training services, electrical and automation audits as well as spare parts and maintenance work for major overhauls.

“We are very enthusiastic about this opportunity to deepen our co-operation with Teck. By working closer together with Red Dog’s team, we believe that together we can enhance the operations of their power generation,” says Tomas Rönn, Vice President, Services, Americas from Wärtsilä.

“We are impressed by Wärtsilä’s high level of commitment to offering customized solutions that address our specific needs,” concludes Ahrens.
