Wärtsilä Propulsion condition monitoring service

PCMS provides the customer with real-time advice and periodic reports concerning the condition of the machinery, as well as information necessary for efficient maintenance planning. With PCMS, customers can enhance the availability, reliability and profitability of their installations, whilst also reducing risks to and the maintenance costs of their assets. PCMS is available in Starter and Professional editions. Both versions enable overhaul intervals to be extended, and promote the optimal condition of the equipment. The professional edition is superior in terms of detecting potential failures and providing long term predictability in maintenance planning. For vessels with a high criticality of operations the professional edition is, therefore, recommended.

Naturally, all risks must be assessed in order to successfully manage a fleet. By providing up-to- date and in-depth information concerning the condition of the vessel’s propulsion equipment, PCMS enables the operator to evaluate these risks far more accurately. This evaluation can be successfully made from the real time advice given by the advisory monitor, and from the monthly reports provided by Wärtsilä’s propulsion experts.

Propulsion machinery is largely mounted under water, and therefore cannot be examined without going into dry dock. Class societies state that thruster condition monitoring (CM) can replace visual internal inspections of the thruster. With PCMS, the operator can completely eliminate the need to enter a dry dock for visual inspection.

    Benefits

PCMS provides ship owners and/or operators the ability to:

    • base operational decisions on the actual condition of the equipment
    • assess the risk for upcoming contracts based on the projected reliability of the propulsion equipment
    • maximize the availability of the installation by performing overhauls only when needed, and by dramatically reducing the likelihood of unscheduled breakdowns
    • be informed of faults (such as cracks in bearings or gears) well before they lead to breakdowns
    • reduce the total cost of ownership and maximize profitability
    • increase the lifetime of the equipment and preserve its good condition through having feedback on factors that generate excess wear
    Application
    Any propeller brand
