Wärtsilä was placed first in the Best First-Time Report category of the European Environmental Reports competition this year, the sixth in the competition’s history. The award was presented on 29 April 2002 in Copenhagen by the European Federation of Accountants. Environmental reports were submitted from altogether 15 countries and the competition comprised four categories: Best Sustainability Report, Best Environmental Report, Best First-Time Report, and Best SME Report.
In the judges’ opinion the Wärtsilä report contained all the essential elements required in an environmental report and it forms an excellent platform for reporting in the future since it is based on the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The judges also noted that the report was strong on communication highly informative: it gave a balanced description of both positive and negative news and the report’s good structure made the information it contained easily accessible.
