Wärtsilä in Ireland was formed in 1994 and first established a small operation based in Dublin and then subsequently a second new workshop in Killybegs, Donegal.
Over the following years to the year 2000 the business was built up to a point where it represented 15% of the total UK/Irish Service business and made a major contribution to new equipment sales.

The main activities are service and spares support to the Irish Sea ferries which use Wärtsilä machinery, and the large population of Wärtsilä group engines in the fishing fleet. But in addition, Wärtsilä have supplied main power generation gas fuelled engines for the manufacturing plants of Waterford Crystal and Bausch and Lomb, in Waterford, heavy fuel burning base load power plant for Shorts in Belfast, as well as a new renewable energy plant at Grainger Sawmills in Cork, turning wood waste into valuable environmentally friendly power. These contracts have included Operation and Maintenance contracts for the plants in one form or another.
With the changes that have taken place in activities over recent years, the Service depot in Dublin has been increased in size, and the Killybegs operation transferred, so now the business is consolidated in one location, in Tallaght, near Dublin, and is currently under the Management of Mr Tom Lanigan.
