Wärtsilä and Shell sign oil supply agreement

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade & Technical Press Release, May 2008

Wärtsilä in Hungary has signed a long-term agreement with Shell Hungary zRt for the supply of its Mysella XL 40 engine oil.

The lubricant will be used in all Wärtsilä 34SG and Wärtsilä 220SG combined heat and power (CHP) plants in operation across Hungary, which together supply a total of 113 MW of electrical power to the national grid.

The three-year supply arrangement follows the signing of a global agreement between Wärtsilä Corporation and Shell Lubricants, and specifies that Shell's Mysella XL 40 will be ordered on an as-needed basis.

Wärtsilä's next-generation gas engines are designed to meet current and future emissions legislation. Mysella XL 40 is specially developed for spark-ignited gas engines that employ the latest lean burn technology.

Wärtsilä and Shell have a well-established relationship. In 1994, Shell installed a 4-cylinder Wärtsilä in-line 20 diesel engine in its Research and Development center for lube oil and fuel testing. This engine was used extensively to develop  the Shell Argina range of lubricants for medium-speed diesel engines.

"This agreement, which furthers our strong and long relationship with Shell in Hungary, is of valuable importance to the continued successful operation of our power plants" said Mr Tom Backlund, Managing Director of Wärtsilä in Hungary.

"Shell's Mysella XL 40 is a highly successful lubricants product, designed specifically to suit the high operating parameters and oil stresses of spark-ignited gas engines like the Wärtsilä 34SG's we have in operation throughout Hungary. Two more power plants will come on stream in the next two years and will also benefit from use of this lubricant," added Mr Backlund.
