Carla joined Wärtsilä in 1986 as an office junior, and is one of our longest serving employees. At that time, the UK company was still part of the Stork-Werkspoor Group of companies.
Carla quickly progressed to spare parts co-ordinator before moving on to an administration role, assisting various Technical and Managerial departments. She now works as our Ship Power Sales & Marketing Administrator from our office in Tonbridge, Kent.
Carla says "I have worked for Wärtsilä for many years now and have seen numerous changes in the organisation, but the one constant thing is the fantastic working relationship developed with my Wärtsilä colleagues, both in the UK and abroad. My job involves lots of different tasks ranging from administrative support of our sales managers to co-ordinating exhibitions and mailing out our customer journals. I get involved with most aspects of the Ship Power sales business and am responsible for our marketing and publicity activities within the UK and Ireland. I often get the chance to travel to destinations in the UK and Europe as part of my job, which I enjoy. It is a varied and challenging role and I am able to apply the skills I have learned over the years to provide effective support to my department and hopefully contribute to the success of our UK Company".
A typical working day for Carla starts with the morning post which she opens and distributes as necessary to colleagues. She then goes on to deal with the various e-mails requesting information and assistance on matters relating to Ship Power business or exhibitions. Following a quick break for coffee and a biscuit, it is on to financial matters such as preparing invoices for network commission or co-ordinating the marketing expenditure budget. Lunch is usually taken at her desk, or sometimes she has the chance to meet up with colleagues for lunch at a local pub. After lunch Carla continues with her daily tasks, in between requests for hotel bookings or making travel arrangements for her managers. At around 4.00 p.m. Carla prepares the outgoing post and has it ready to drop off into the mailbox on her way home. A final check of e-mails and dispatch of brochures to another office may follow before Carla finally switches off her PC and goes home at around 5.30 p.m. Tomorrow is another day - but never the same as the one before!
