Our History

Our Past

Wärtsilä UK Ltd is the wholly owned network company of Wärtsilä Corporation, responsible for the Group's activities in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company was originally a subsidiary of the Dutch engineering company Stork NV, and had offices in Hull and later in London before relocating to Kent in the South of England in the late 1970’s. Our head office is now in Fareham, Hampshire.

In 1989 Wärtsilä acquired a 60% majority shareholding in Stork-Werkspoor BV and hence the company became part of the Wärtsilä Diesel Group. Wärtsilä acquired the total business from Stork NV in 1999.

Wärtsilä Ireland was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Wärtsilä UK Ltd to cater for our marine and power plant customers in the Irish Republic. It has its head office in Dublin, along with a full service capability including workshop, field service engineers, spare parts and on-site repair and reconditioning services.

The Present Day

Wärtsilä has grown by acquisition over the years, incorporating Nohab, Wichmann, SACM, Sulzer, John-Crane Lips, Ciserv,  and most recently, Total Automation brands to the Wärtsilä portfolio. Wärtsilä has now significantly expanded products and services as a result, and now also covers shaft alignment, ship docking, control system and engine reconditioning services. We are also able to offer a full service capability for the Deutz marine diesel engine range.

From those small beginnings we have now grown to a company with more than 150 employees in seven locations in the United Kingdom & Ireland.

Wärtsilä Propulsion
Our sister company, Wärtsilä Propulsion UK Ltd. joined the Wärtsilä stable in 2002 as part of the acquisition of the John-Crane Lips organisation. At their production facility in Havant, Hampshire they manufacture marine seals for installation on all types of vessels.  As of 1st January 2008 the company is now renamed Wärtsilä UK Ltd. and is the Head Office for the United Kingdom network.

Two new additions to the UK network

During 2007 Wärtsilä acquired two new companies who are now part of the UK network.   The first acquisition in May was that of McCall Propellers Ltd. whose facilities are based near Glasgow Airport.  The company provides emergency repair services for propeller blades, couplings, propeller hub components and associated equipment.  They have a team of service engineers available to carry out repairs on disabled vessels afloat or in drydock anywhere in the world.

In August 2007 Wärtsilä acquired the business of Electrical Power Engineering Ltd. who specialise in the provision of electrical power engineering solutions for the marine, offshore and utilities segments. Their main activities are in the conversion and upgrade of marine power plants, retrofitting of switchboards, governing and protection systems and voltage regulation. The company is located in Montrose, Scotland and they also have a branch office in North America.  Both companies are now known under the name Wärtsilä UK Limited.
