Wärtsilä Stern Tube Seals (Oil Lubricated)

Most commercial stern tubes are of the oil lubricated type and require a robust and reliable sealing solution

The technologies behind all Wärtsilä oil lubricated sealing products are a result of many years of experience and development. Maximising longevity while facilating servicing and maintaining exemplary sealing performance has been our fundamental philosophy. Within the oil lubricated seal product range, there are both face and lipe seal variants to deal with a wide variety of operating profiles including abrasive waters and compliance to anti-pollution requirements.

Following the acquisitions of John Crane - Lips, Japan Marine Technologies and Cedervall Businesses as well as the acquisitions of the brand names DSS - Deep Sea Seals, Lips and JMT - Japan Marine Technologies by Wärtsilä, the products are renamed respectively:

The Wärtsilä Bio Seal Ring has been developed to meet the latest environmental regulations regarding the use of biodegradable oils / EAL’s in stern tubes (for fixed pitch propeller only at this time).
It allows customers to upgrade from conventional seal rings which are currently recommended to be changed at 2.5 year intervals when used with biodegradable oils.

The Wärtsilä Bio Seal Ring properties allow for long life
with service intervals of at least 5 years.

  • For use with Ester type biodegradable oils.
  • New build and retrofit markets (bonded around the shaft using current techniques)
  • Available for all Wärtsilä conventional seal ring sizes

Wärtsilä Sternguard
Oil lubricated outboard, OLS3-P & OLS4-P, and inboard, OLS2-P, stern tube lip type seals consist of the following key components: casing set, high wear resistant seal rings and liner.
The seal rings are made of Viton® rubber. The liner provides a running surface for the seal rings and protects the propeller shaft from wear.
Although as standard, they are partially split cost efficient solutions, they are also available in a fully split option providing the possibility to perform retrofits without removing any components in the shaft line.

Oil lubricated outboard, OFS1H-F & OFS1H-N, and inboard, OFS1HW-F & OFS1HW-N, stem tube seals are designed to offer a durable solution suitable for the harsh working conditions of propeller shaft seals. As standard, they are fully split providing the possibility to perform retrofits and overhauls without removing the shaft line or propeller. Non-split cost efficient solutions are also available.

Oil lubricated outboard stern tube lip type seals consist of the following key components: casing set, high wear resistant seal rings and liner. The seal rings are made of Viton® rubber. The liner provides a running surface for the seal rings and protects the propeller shaft from wear.
Although as standard, they are partially split solutions, they are also available as fully split providing the possibility to remove and replace without disturbing any components in the shaftline.
The Wärtsilä Airguard range, OLS3A-P & OLS4A-P,contains an automatic air pressure control seal systems with air control unit, drain collection unit, oil tank and pump.

The Wärtsilä Sandguard oil lubricated
outboard stern tube lip type seals are
specially designed for dirty water
conditions. They consist of the following
key components: casing set, high wear
resistant seal rings and liner. The seal
rings are made of Viton® rubber.
The liner provides a running surface
for the seal rings and protects the
propeller shaft from wear. Although
as standard, they are partially split
solutions, they are also available as
fully split providing the possibility
to remove and replace without disturbing
any components in the shaft line.
Fresh water is supplied to the seawater
chamber to ensure all sea particles/debris
is cleared from the dynamic seal ring
interfaces, providing protection &
longevity of the seal.

Oil lubricated outboard face type seal which offers anti-pollution and abrasion resistance capabilities to cruise, ferry & offshore applications.
The Wärtsilä Oceanguard product range uses a unique design with a face type seal in the sea water and lip seals to operate in the stem tube oil.
The standard seal, OFS3H-P, contains a void space between the water and oil interfaces to provide a separation that enables monitor and draining. This prevents any contamination of the oil system with sea water and vice versa.
