Wärtsilä Ship Design offers a broad range of specialized vessel designs. Based on our more than 50 years of experience, we design unique, dedicated vessels that meet the specific requirements of the customer.
Working in close co-operation with the owner and yard, all vessels are designed with an emphasis on low fuel consumption, a minimal environmental footprint, and safety and comfort for the crew.
Our specialized vessels portfolio comprises research vessels, tugs and workboats, and offshore wind turbine installation and maintenance vessels. We have worked for all kinds of research disciplines, including oceanographic, hydrographical, geophysical, fishery and polar research.

In designing cable laying vessels, we place a strong emphasis on high operability, a minimal environmental footprint, and streamlined laying operations.
WSD designs dedicated fibre optic cable laying vessels for the telecoms industry, and power cable laying vessels needed typically for offshore wind farms. In close co-operation with the owner, shipyard, and the equipment supplier, WSD tailors the design according to the required lay speed and other essential criteria.

The heavy Icebreaker, Deep-Sea Drilling, and Multi-Purpose Research Vessel, the 'Aurora Borealis' was designed by Wärtsilä Ship Design. When it enters service in 2016, it will be the most advanced Polar Research Vessel in the world, and used to support climate/environmental research. »
