Robustness & reliability as the prime mover in smaller vessels or for generating set applications
The Wärtsilä 20 has proven its robustness and reliability with over 4000 engines delivered since its introduction to the market in the early 1990s. The engine can switch from MDO to HFO and vice versa without power interruption at any engine operation load.
The Wärtsilä 20 engine is fully compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention.

Wärtsilä engines are delivered with the UNIC embedded engine management system.
The UNIC system is designed to ensure extended lifetime for large marine diesel and gas engines operating in the toughest of conditions. Special attention has been paid to temperature- and vibration endurance throughout the design, while the highest priority has been given to operational reliability.
Key features of the UNIC system include the engine safety system, local monitoring, speed control with loadsharing, fuel injection- and timing control, knock detection, alarm signal acquisition, start/stop sequencing, load reduction request, system diagnostics, and a fieldbus interface as applicable for each engine configuration.
Thanks to the electronic control, the engine can be adapted to different operating conditions. Furthermore, the pre-tested configuration allows the engine or generating set to be made ready for operation with a minimum of commissioning and installation work.
The ‘MPV Hirta’, launched in 2008, is Marine Scotland’s newest vessel. For the diesel electric propulsion system, Wärtsilä supplied three Wärtsilä 9L20 engines driving a reduction gear and a controllable pitch propeller. »
The multi-purpose container carrier 'Wladyslaw Orkan', delivered in 2003, features a machinery installation that includes a Wärtsilä 7RT-flex60C main engine and three Wärtsilä 6L20 auxiliary engines. »
For the 16400 dwt chemical tanker ‘Sten Idun’, delivered in 2003, Wärtsilä is supplying an extensive machinery package that includes a Wärtsilä 6L46 main engine, gearbox, controllable pitch propeller and rudder. »
