Between 1997 and 1998 Wärtsilä installed two gas compression generating sets of the model Wärtsilä 16V26SG of 50 MKPCD at Barrancabermeja’s compressor station in Santander. The first signed Service Agreement was also made with The Hanover Compression Company, Inc. supply of ECOGAS (Colombian Company of Gas) for 5 years.
Wärtsilä signed in 1997 a contract for the construction of a 24.7 MW power plant with Cementos Diamante (now Cemex Colombia S.A, the third largest producer of cement in the world) equipped with five Wärtsilä 18V34SG engines for the Caracolito Cement Plant (production capacity 180.000 tons per month). At the same time a full operation and maintenance agreement was signed for 15 years.
In 1999 Wärtsilä was running two emergency generating sets (Wärtsilä 18V200) with the capacity of 4.8 MW for residual waters treatment for the local government.
In 2002 Wärtsilä signed an Equipment Supply contract with Tolcemento (today Cementos Argos S.A.) for the provision of two generating sets (Wärtsilä 18V34SG). The capacity of this self-generation project is 11.6 MWe. Cementos Argos S.A. is the major cement industry in Colombia, and it is a holding member of the Antioqueño´s Holding Group – GEA. During 2002 Wärtsilä also signed a maintenance agreement for eight (8) years per engine.
