- 1989 Wärtsilä Diesel acquired the French company SACM, a manufacturer or high-speed engines, and Stork Werkspoor B.V. was renamed Stork-Wärtsilä Diesel B.V.
- 1990 Wärtsilä merged with the Lohja Corporation, and was later renamed Metra Corporation.
- 1995 Wärtsilä Diesel and Cummins Engine Company Inc. established an alliance.
- 1997 With the merger of Wärtsilä Diesel, New Sulzer Diesel and Diesel Ricerche, Wärtsilä Corporation rose to the position of the market leader.
- 1999 The Cummins-Wärtsilä alliance was concluded.
- 2000 Wärtsilä NSD and John Crane-Lips signed an alliance agreement. The Metra Group was renamed Wartsila Corporation.
- 2001 Wärtsilä acquired the services company Ciserv Ab.
- 2002 The Ciserv Group expanded its offices in Singapore, Denmark and Canada.
- Wärtsilä acquired John Crane Lips, which was then operated under the name of Wärtsilä Propulsion.
- 2003 Wärtsilä and Volvo Penta signed a cooperation agreement.
- 2004 Wärtsilä’s propeller company in China started up production. Wärtsilä launched its new engine Wärtsilä 46F on the market at the Hamburg Trade Fair.
