NUCLEP, located in Itaguai, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was founded in December 1975 to design and fabricate heavy components for the primary circuits of nuclear power plants. It was a strategic decision because Brazil, at the time, had no company for that task.

With the slowing down of the national nuclear programme in the 1980s, NUCLEP capitalised on its high-level industrial and technological capacities to enter new markets. It established partnerships with some of the country's top companies and started to produce sophisticated components for the non-nuclear energy sector and for the offshore, naval, mining, oil and chemical industries of Brazil. In 1986, the Brazilian Navy requested NUCLEP to develop and fabricate the pressure hulls for a series of submarines.

Wärtsilä signed a licence agreement on the 11 January 2006 with NUCLEP. The agreement grants NUCLEP the right to manufacture certain types of Wärtsilä’s most modern electronically-controlled common-rail two-stroke marine diesel engines with bore sizes between 50 and 68 cm at its premises in Itaguai with a targeted annual output of six to ten engines.
