Hard Chroming

Wärtsilä's industrial hard chroming is an electroplating process in which a hard layer of chromium is deposited onto a metal surface. Chroming is usually performed to enhance surface hardness and wear resistance, to protect from corrosion, or to build up and restore worn dimensions.

Wärtsilä's hard chrome plating shop utilizes deep chrome tanks and high output rectifiers that enable large complex components to be plated. In place of welding, hard chrome can be applied to a worn surface to build up the dimension for grinding back to standard. Hard chrome is a very durable surface with hardness in excess of 60RC and a friction reduction of 15%.

Hard chrome can either be built up or flashed for surface protection on saw blades, shafts, cylinders, housings, pins, bores, bed and wear plates, feed rolls, piston grooves, spindles, liners, crankshafts, etc. The applications are quite extensive, so give us a call to any item you might be considering.

Wärtsilä Canada is Lloyd's Registry approved for chrome plating of piston crown ring grooves, exhaust valve spindle stems and cylinder liner bores. With over 30 years experience we welcome the opportunity to review our capabilities and be of service to you. We operate 7 days a week to meet any delivery requirements.
