Sand Blasting & Stress Relieving

Sand blasting
Wärtsilä's workshop has a large modern sandblast booth in which oversize components can be rapidly stripped down to a grey metal finish.

Sandblasting is a critical operation to clean the components to inspect for damage and to perform appropriate crack inspections.

In addition to the coarse blasting of large components, finer degrees of blasting with a variety of media can be accomplished. Glass bead is used in smaller cabinets to clean precision components to a pearl finish without compromising dimensional integrity.

Stress relieving
Stress relieving is performed in a large furnace that is microprocessor controlled. Stress relieving, normalizing and annealing Programmed heating, soak and cooling cycles are monitored and recorded on heat charts that provide an accurate record of the exact temperature ranges to which a component has been subjected.

This sevice is available to other companies on a sub-contract basis, as there are very few furnaces of this size (8' x 8' x 8') with controlled temperatures up to 2000 degrees F. Our chart recorder is a dual pen, with one pen monitoring the ambient temperature and the other electronically connected to the components, thereby confirming that the desired requirements have been achieved.  The recording equipment monitoring the temperature is regularly calibrated to ISO standards by an independent third party.
