Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik

Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik has been a market leader in the niche of underwater acoustics for naval applications as well as for hydrographic survey and navigation applications for almost 100 years. The product portfolio includes sonar systems, echo sounders as well as underwater communication systems and data link units.

Besides furnishing new vessels and submarines, Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik specialises in sonar modernisation by customer-specific modification development.

Furthermore, Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik offers installation and service of the products and customer support by training and logistics. All products are manufactured at the Kiel facility and are known for their reliability and advanced technique.

History

In 1908, a group of scientists started research about the sound propagation in water. The company ELECTROACUSTIC (ELAC) – founded in 1926 in Kiel – used the research results for the development of first units ready for serial production, e.g. echo sounders. ELAC always held a significant part in the world’s commercial market, especially in the field of underwater sounding. In 1951, the first fishing sounder called “Fischlupe” succeeded in worldwide distribution of the Kiel technology.

For decades, ELAC has developed and produced for special products and systems for underwater communication for the German Navy. The product range has constantly been extended over the years, for example with the Acquisition of SeaBeam (1999), the development of the first digital underwater communication system in 2006 and the Open architecture Sonar Suite in 2012.

Today, Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik's systems and products are installed on almost all NATO vessels as well as on navy vessels of many befriended nations. Apart from the expansion in the naval market, Wärtsilä ELAC Nautik has achieved a worldwide reputation as manufacturer of hydroacoustic systems for research vessels and has become a reliable partner in systems for merchant shipping.

In 2015, ELAC Nautik became part of the Wärtsilä Corporation.
