In 2005, the Chilean Navy (DGTMMN) ordered two patrol vessels from ASMAR Talcahuano shipyard, Chile. The design of the vessels, from Fassmer GmbH, was adapted in different aspects to fit the requirements of their mission profile.

These vessels will be operated by the Coast Guard Service of the Chilean Navy and they will conduct defence missions in Chile’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), including control and protection of the maritime traffic and logistic support to isolated locations.

The Naval Zones (four in total) are responsible for their own maritime areas with all the forces including the patrol ships. The first vessel named Piloto Pardo entered service in 2008. Piloto Pardo will be based in Talcahuano under the command of the CinC of the 2nd Naval Zone.

Wärtsilä solution
The patrol vessels are both equipped with two 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 26 main engines having a combined power of 8160 kW at 1000 rpm for a maximum speed of more than 20 knots. Each engine drives a controllable-pitch propeller through a single-input Wärtsilä reduction gearbox. Wärtsilä also supplies the control systems for engines and propellers and sterntube seals.

A key factor in Wärtsilä winning this contract was the company’s ability to supply complete, integrated propulsion systems. Such complete solutions offer real benefits in terms of manufacturer’s support through the life of a vessel.
