Energy, environment and economy

Wärtsilä power plants

At Wärtsilä, sustainability goes beyond energy. It is central to the development of our business activities and products.

Wärtsilä’s sustainable development is based on three inter-related pillars: economic, environmental and social performance.

Good economic performance establishes a foundation for other aspects of sustainability and safeguards the company’s future operation. It involves meeting the expectations of shareholders and contributing towards the well-being of society. This requires the company’s operation to be profitable and competitive.

Good environmental performance means protecting the air, soil and water as well as combating climate change and using resources in a sustainable way – whether considering  Wärtsilä’s own operations or how its products are used. Environmental performance also requires the company to identify the lifecycle environmental impacts of its products and to reduce these impacts through research and development. Wärtsilä continuously develops and improves its operations with the help of certified environmental systems.

Social performance involves following good practices and procedures in stakeholder relations. This requires continuous cooperation with suppliers, partners and local organizations. The Code of Conduct sets the boundaries for Wärtsilä’s business operations. Other important aspects of good social performance are: creating a safe working environment and operating procedures; ensuring the well-being of the company’s employees and the development of personal skills and competencies.

Wärtsilä’s Board of Management takes overall responsibility for sustainability performance. It defines the sustainability targets and monitors performance against these targets.
