Gujarat Ambuja Cement Group, a cement producer in India, has its flagship cement factory located at Kodinar in the state of Gujarat in India. The factory has a manufacturing capacity of 4.5 Million tons per year. The factory has been operating at 100% capacity. Until 1997 the power for this plant was supplied by 2 x 18V32 Wärtsilä diesel generating sets together with 1 x 6MW MMBL DG set and power drawn from the state utility. In 1997 GACL decided to add generating capacity to meet their entire demand for power from their captive sources, thus becoming independent of the state utility. To do this, they added 4 x 12V46 Wärtsilä DG sets bringing the total installed capacity to 61 MW. In order to concentrate on their core business, cement production, GACL also decided to hand over responsibility for the plant's operation and maintenance to Wärtsilä India Ltd.
Wärtsilä Solution
The power plant consists of 2 x 18V32 and 4 x 12V46 Wärtsilä DG sets along with a 6.0 MW MMBL DG. Wärtsilä India Ltd took over O&M responsibility for the power plant from 1 January 1998. Wärtsilä have consistently exceeded the O&M benchmarks set out in the contract, including guarantees covering running hours, power generation and capacity availability.
