Cementos Diamante Samper, part of the Mexican Cemex Group, is the third largest producer of cement in the world. In 1997 Cementos Diamante started the construction of a new cement plant with a capacity of 180,000 tons of cement per month. Due to the weak electricity system in the area, the design included a 25 MW power plant. Using the availability of natural gas close to the plant, guaranteeing electricity all year round, the owner contracted Wärtsilä Finland to supply a turnkey power plant.
Wärtsilä solution
The plant consists of five 18V34SG Wärtsilä engines designed for continuous operation in parallel with the grid. Wärtsilä is providing O&M services for the plant, including technical support and full supply of spare parts. The power plant is being operated and maintained under internationally recognized procedures as an integral part of the plant's Quality and Environmental Assurance Programs. Colombia Energy Operators S. A., a Wärtsilä company established to administrate the O&M contract, was granted ISO 9000 certification in 1999, ISO 14000 in 2000 and OHSAS 18001 in 2002..
