Wärtsilä and 3. Maj renew licence agreement on low-speed marine diesel engines

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release 6 May 2009 at 10:00 UTC+2

Wärtsilä Corporation and 3. Maj Shipbuilding Industry Ltd of Croatia have signed a ten-year renewal of the existing licence agreement for the marketing, sale, manufacturing and servicing of Wärtsilä low-speed marine diesel engines. The low-speed engine business of 3. Maj is handled by 3. Maj Engines & Cranes Joint Stock Company in Rijeka, Croatia. Wärtsilä Corporation is the leading system integrator in the marine industry.

The licence agreement is a basis for the continuous transfer of innovative diesel engine technology and technical assistance for manufacturing from Wärtsilä to 3. Maj. In addition to sales to the domestic Croatian market, the agreement also secures access to key export markets in Europe and North America. This licence agreement is of strategic importance as it confirms 3. Maj’s position as one of the leading manufacturers of low-speed diesel engines in Europe. The partnership between Wärtsilä and 3.Maj goes back to an agreement signed in 1954.

Although 3. Maj has the capacity to build any size of Wärtsilä low-speed engine up to about 840 mm cylinder bore, the company has concentrated in recent years on engines in the 480 to 720 mm bore range. Most recently 3. Maj has built Wärtsilä RT-flex engines, which incorporate the very latest electronically-controlled common rail technology.

3. Maj’s capabilities as manufacturer of two-stroke engines were highlighted in 2008, when 3. Maj delivered to Wärtsilä the full-size, state-of-the-art RTX-4 research and test engine for Wärtsilä’s Diesel Technology Centre in Winterthur, Switzerland. This engine incorporates some of the most advanced technological features for two-stroke diesel engines and will be used to develop the next generation of the Wärtsilä low speed engines. In 2009, 3. Maj will deliver 14 engines of the Wärtsilä RTA48T-B and RT-flex50 types.
