"The multicultural nature of the job makes it very interesting. It has implications to all areas of interaction. Having spent nine years outside Finland and the rest of my working life travelling, I can only state that there is never a dull moment in this business."
Current development
I live in Helsinki, Finland, with my wife and two kids and a Tibetan Spaniel called Cheni. I am in charge of a number of activities for the company. I see to Group reporting, accounting, planning and taxation. I participate in the investor relations activities, treasury functions, risk management and Group travel management and am a member of the Board of Management.
Due to the international nature of the job and the size of the company, there is a nice mixture of cultures, challenges and opportunities. I am part of a good team. Changes within the Group structure have brought new aspects to the daily business - the stock market is now very interested in us.
Winding career path
My career path has been varied. I joined Wärtsilä in 1976, working first with the Group, then spending one year with the Sanitec group in the USA. I worked four years as Group controller and Board of Management member with Wärtsilä Diesel, and then from 1984 until mid-1988 I served as president of Wärtsilä’s Diesel's factory and regional base in Singapore. I was Global Service Business Vice President until the end of 1989, and left the Group after that for nine years.
During that time I spent two years running a group of trailer companies within a venture capital company, and then seven years with Tamrock, a leading mining equipment supplier as CFO, President of Service and President of business sector Coal. Three years were spent in the USA and one year in Austria. I came back to Wärtsilä in December 1998 as Group CFO.
